Ozempic, or semaglutide, is a medication used to treat type 2 diabetes and belongs to a class of drugs called GLP-1 receptor agonists. It works by mimicking the action of a hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), which helps regulate blood sugar levels by stimulating insulin release, slowing down digestion, and reducing appetite. This leads to lower blood sugar levels and can result in significant weight loss. Medications like Ozempic have been used for years to treat diabetes, however, they have recently gained immense popularity solely for their off-label use of weight loss. If you're taking Ozempic for wedding weight loss, here's what you should know.
Its obvious that weight loss brings about a multitude of health benefits, ranging from improved blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar, as well as enhanced physical appearance and confidence. However, losing weight rapidly, which happens with drugs like Ozempic, can also decrease muscle mass, lower resting metabolic rate, and decrease bone density. This can lead to a condition called sarcopenia, or the loss of muscle mass, strength and function. This is sometimes referred to as “skinny fat” and has recently been described in the media as “Ozempic face” or “Ozempic butt.” Essentially, the cause is not the drug itself, but rather the rapid speed at which weight is lost without the proper concurrent diet and exercise. This will be not be the desired outcome for brides and grooms who are looking to achieve a toned physique.
Although we are not against using GLP-1 receptor agonists like Ozempic, we believe that it is essential to maintain a consistent workout regime in tandem, incorporating strength and resistance training. This will preserve your muscle as you are losing weight, so that you lose fat instead of muscle mass. Increased muscle mass will make you look more toned, as well as enhance your resting metabolism, helping you burn more calories throughout the day. Strength and resistance training also improves mobility, quality of daily life, and increases your lifespan. In addition, adopting a routine of regular physical activity and strength training will help you form sustainable healthy habits, promoting independence and empowerment, should you choose to discontinue the medication.
The reduced appetite that comes from taking Ozempic can also lead to decreased protein intake. Protein is essential for muscle maintenance and overall health. It provides the amino acids necessary for muscle repair and growth. When you’re losing weight, your body can break down muscle tissue for energy if protein intake is insufficient, leading to muscle loss. To mitigate these effects it is important to calculate your protein needs and incorporate that into your diet.
The general recommendation for protein intake is about 0.8 grams per kg of body weight. To calculate your own weight in kg, divide your weight in pounds by 2.2. For example, if we consider the average person to be about 70 kg (154 lb), then they should consume about 56g of protein a day. However, if you are looking to preserve muscle mass during weight loss, intake should be higher, around 1.2 to 2.2 g per kg of body weight. So that same 70 kg person should consume 84-154 g of protein per day. Be sure to consult with your healthcare provider to determine your specific needs.
Try to include a variety of protein rich foods such as lean meats, poultry, fish, eggs, dairy products, legumes, tofu, and nuts. Aim to include protein in every meal and snack to help you meet your daily requirements. You can also consider protein supplements such as whey protein, or plant-based protein powders. These can easily be added to smoothies, oatmeal or other meals. Try to spread out protein consumption throughout the day evenly across all meals. This helps maintain a steady supply of amino acids for muscle protein synthesis.
